The drive
A morning measured by the light, not the hours.
Yala's Block 1 holds the highest recorded leopard density on earth. Most jeeps tear through it. We don't. The day begins before dawn at the park gate, and from there it's a slow drive — stopping for tracks, parking at vantage points, idling where the light is working. By mid-morning, when the heat thins the activity and the convoys are still circling, we're usually parked somewhere quiet, watching.

Photographer's notes
From Amavin.
Personal field notes for travellers shooting this drive.
This drive favours the morning light. Leopards move at the edges of the scrub road between 6 and 9 a.m., and the side-light through the dust is where the strongest frames come from. Bring a long lens — 400mm minimum if you have it. We'll position the jeep for shooting, not just spotting.
Frequently asked
About this drive.
How early is the pickup?+
5:30 AM from your hotel if you're within 20 km of the park gate. Earlier if you're staying further out.
What if we don't see a leopard?+
Sightings are never guaranteed. Our hit rate runs above the park average because of how we plan routes — but Yala is wild, and the bush keeps its own schedule.
